Walking Tour of the University of Michigan's College of Engineering Campus

A walking tour highlighting the College of Engineering's campus at the University of Michigan will be offered on Wednesday afternoon,September 23, 2009. Conference guests who wish to join us on this tour will be transported from the conference venue, Palmer Commons, to the Francois-Xavier Bagnoud (FXB) Building, home of Michigan's Aerospace Engineering Department, the first Aero department in the United States.

Conference guests will learn about student projects through displays showcased in the FXB atrium including those for the Student Space Systems Fabrication Laboratory [S3FL] (space elevator, microgravity experiments, balloon satellites, etc.), the Solar Car Team, and the S3FL M-Cubed cubesat mission. Also on display will be the Michigan's Space Physics Research Laboratory's heritage and flight instruments spanning some 60 years, which have flown on sounding rockets and space vehicles. From the FXB, we will walk over to the Wave Field designed by famed Vietnam Veterans' Memorial artist and architect, Maya Lin, and then onto Michigan Engineering's Lurie Nanofabrication Facility (LNF). Having recently completed a $40 Million expansion and renovation, the LNF is a world-class laboratory for device, nano-scale and micro-electromechanical system (MEMS) technology research.

If time permits, we will walk over to the Duderstadt Media Center, the Walgreen Drama Center, and the Arthur Miller Theater. After the tour concludes, guests may continue touring the campus, return to their hotel, or visit the Plasmadynamics and Electric Propulsion Laboratory less than a mile from the College of Engineering's campus (transportation will be provided).
